Wakarusa Festival Review & Photos – Day 3 – 06/09/07

3rd day of Wakarusa is a lazy one for me as I lounge around in the morning chatting with the other campers, ate some lunch and headed back to the tent to check for cracks in the back of my eyelids. Woke up in time to see Tea Leaf Green over at the Revival Tent, who played last week at the Mountain Jam but I missed most of their set. From the San Francisco area, every one of these guys had great energy and had a few sit-ins come on stage such as Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain String Band and Andy Goessling from Railroad Earth. The bass player, Ben C., was one of the most animated I have seen in a while and I look forward to seeing them again at the Gathering of the Vibes Festival in August.

Another long break was in store as I was saving my energy for standing up amongst the rest of my peeps for Widespead Panic and their 4 hour set. I saw them for the first time back at Jazzfest in 2005 for about 30 minutes, so I wanted to stay for the whole set since they seemed to be the band most people came to see. They started out with a Talking Head song, "Swamp", then heading into some long instrumental jams. The crowd really hit a high vibe with "Tall Boy" and my favorite song of the night "Second Skin". My take on my first full set of Widespread Panic was I liked them but I thought it was more the Jimmy Herring show, a great guitarist in his own right from days with the Allman Brother and Phil Lesh and Friends. I would have prefered to see more of the band members in individual performances, even though Domingo Ortiz did hit hard toward the end of the set with his percussion and great set of musical toys at his disposal.
