Direct flights vs. connecting flights on airplanes

I know it is a personal choice but I absolutely hate to travel on an airplane that has connecting flights. I am lucky enough to have D/FW Airport so close by and American Airlines does fly to just about anywhere I need to go as a direct flight, but I was asked by a friend lately why I fly American so much. I don’t have a particular love for the airline but they have about 70% of the business out of D/FW so it is usually the only choice now that Delta Airlines has shut down most of their operations (unless I was wanting to fly to Atlanta, Salt Lake City or Cincinnati). Southwest Airlines is great and I still use them occasionally to fly in-state or back home to New Orleans but American usually matches their prices and Love Field adds another 20-25 minutes to my drive. I am sure we will see the landscape change once the Wright Amendment is finally out of the way in about 7 years and by then Southwest will probably be flying out of D/FW but until that time comes it will be direct flights and American Airlines for me.
